CHESAPEAKE, Ohio (WSAZ) – While the Tri-State region has avoided flash flooding so far, the heavy rain is still causing problems for some – in the form of standing water.

That’s what’s happening in Jim Craft’s yard in Chesapeake. Craft, who has lived on Lunsford Lane for 23 years, said his yard floods once or twice a year and results in several inches of standing water.

“The water just comes up off this hill over here, off the fire department,” Craft said, motioning to the Chesapeake Fire Department station uphill from his house. “[It] comes across the driveway and it lands out here in this field.”

Craft’s grandson, Daniel Owens, works at the Chesapeake Fire Department and stays with his grandparents sometimes. He was sleeping in the basement when his grandmother called him Sunday morning to let him know the basement was flooding.

“It happens every year, but it don't happen this bad,” Owens said. “This is the worst I've seen it in probably two or three years.”

Meanwhile, outside in the yard, Craft surveyed the damage.

“Your table, your swing and the flowers and everything -- underwater every time it rains,” Craft said. “I mean, when it rains hard like this."

He said he is afraid to keep anything in his basement because the water comes up above his ankles when it floods.

"You're feeling like you're going to have to take everything out of your basement [and] put it somewhere else,” Craft said. “It ruins everything in it. If you got anything in the floor in there, it's ruined.”

He added, “You put a couch in there, dresser or anything, you either got to move it out or throw it out when it does this.”

Craft said he hopes the city will consider installing a drain on the corner of his yard so he won’t have to worry about flooding when it rains.

While many parts of the region have reported street flooding and standing water, there have not been any major flash floods reported.
