MARTIN COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A Martin County family was relieved when they located their stolen car but when they went to pick it up, it had been crushed.
Donnie Stacy says his son’s car was stolen sometime Tuesday from outside the apartment complex where he lived.
Stacy says his son made some calls and discovered the thief had taken it to a local recycling center where it was sold for $240.
He and his son immediately went to the scrap yard, instead of finding the black Pontiac Sunbird in one piece, it had been crushed.
"We walked all around looking...I said 'Jason they've already squashed it, because there's a tire and fender off of it,' and then he started crying," Stacy says.
All of this happened within just a couple of hours. It is a crime the Martin County Sheriff Garmon Preece says is becoming more common.
"They want that two or three hundred dollars they get out of that vehicle, so they take your vehicle and have it crushed. Just observe and make sure you are careful about who your friends are,” says Preece.
Sheriff Preece says they do have some people of interest in the case and they are working to put the case together and present it to a grand jury.
