NEW BOSTON, Ohio (WSAZ) --Many schools have delayed class because of the frigid weather, but a school that just opened a couple months ago sent kids home early Tuesday morning because of the cold temperatures inside.
"It was freezing,” freshman Bre Burgett said. “I had chill bumps and everything."
"It was so cold this morning I had to take my blanket into the classroom with me," sophomore Sierra Hatcher said.
Students at New Boston School, which is pre-K through 12th grade, were sent home early. Temperatures in parts of the building were in the 50s.
"There was air blowing through the vents, but it was all cold air," Burgett said.
Superintendent Mike Staggs says the heating system at the new school isn’t clicking quite yet.
"It's hard to learn when you're not comfortable," Staggs said.
Staggs says they've known since the school opened the heating system wasn't working just right, but he says it hadn't been a serious problem until Tuesday morning when the temperatures dropped to close to single digits.
"Every superintendent I've talked to who’s been through this process has said they've had the same sort of problems, but usually they don't have 11-degree days," he said.
Staggs says crews have been working to synchronize the system and get the bugs worked out.
The district passed a levy in 2008 to build the school, but it wasn't open until mid-November because of a series of setbacks.
Parents and students say it's frustrating finally having a new school and then having a problem like this.
"It's shocking,” Hatcher said. “We've waited really, really long to get in this school building. With it being cold, it was unexpected."
“I’d understand if it was the old school, but not this one,” parent Tosha Caldwell said.
Skaggs says the building should be warm Wednesday, and they don't expect they'll have to close school again.
