CHESAPEAKE, Ohio (WSAZ) -- What started out as an innocent chat online ended in murder for one teenage girl when the person she thought she was talking to turned out to be a child predator. It's a scenario we hear way too much. Thankfully, this time, it's just that--a scenario.
A local middle school is taking advantage of the spooky Halloween season to stage a murder complete with the blood and bones all as a warning and a learning opportunity.
“I've been looking at him on FaceSpace for a month, I know him,” said an actor in the play.
How many times have we heard that? Facebook, MySpace-- young teens on the computer online chatting with whomever. It's often innocent, cut can turn deadly.
Today, it's all fun and games and a little gore. Chesapeake Middle School students are staging a game of clue. The catch? You have to use forensic science to catch the killer.
“Obviously, she was killed out of town,” said a student.
“Anything can be evidence,” said another student.
“We found these folks who have tried to friend her lately on FaceSpace. That’s like Facebook,” said Terry Montgomery, a teacher at Chesapeake Middle School.
“That's our main guess because he's the only one who works in town,” said Matthew Newell, a fifth grader.
“I think it's pretty cool. We're looking for evidence to figure out what happened to Stacy 7 years ago. Sitting in a class is basically very boring,” continued Matthew.
“The students will be teaching ten sessions including ballistics, handwriting analysis, anthropology, facial re-construction,” said Ms. Montgomery.
“It’s kind of scary because I play X-Box live and if any of my friends ask to meet, I can say no,” said a student.
“I think it's fun to learn about forensic science,” said another student.
What a fun and awesome opportunity learn and experience some really high-tech learning. This was a part of the talented and gifted program at Chesapeake Middle School or tag. As a part of the learning experience, the students also got to visit the Forensic Science Department at Marshall University.
