MARTIN COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- The theft of thousands of dollars worth of equipment from the Pigeon Roost Volunteer Fire Department caused it to be unable to respond to emergency calls Wednesday night, the Martin County Sheriff said.

He said thieves broke in and stole thousands of dollars worth of equipment and cut the wires on trucks. Among the stolen items were hoses, clamps, oil and gasoline.

The department is still totaling up the losses and trying to figure out how to get up and running again. For now, it is relying on the Warfield and Inez fire departments to help respond to emergencies.
