ORIGINAL STORY 2/7/14 @ 2:35 p.m.
MASON COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A man has made a plea deal in a murder case to avoid going to trial.

Steven Adkins, 27, pleaded guilty Friday to second degree murder in a Mason County courtroom.

The charge stems back to the July 2011 murder of Rene Gonzalez. The 43-year-old was found dead on the porch of his mobile home along Route 2 in Gallipolis Ferry.

Investigators say he was shot twice.

At the time of the arrests, investigators say that Chad McCallister had hired Adkins and Matthew Woods to kill Gonzalez.

They say McCallister was unhappy that his ex-wife had been in a relationship with Gonzalez and the men had fought several times over the woman.

Woods was accused of driving Adkins to Gonzalez's home, where Adkins shot the victim.

The criminal complaint says Adkins was arrested at his mother's residence. Investigators say they found him hiding in a closet. A .410 gauge shotgun with what appeared to be blood splatter was found in Adkins room; and a pair of blue jeans, with what appeared to be blood splatter, were found in a washing machine.

McCallister pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the case in December 2012. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Matthew Woods pleaded guilty to second degree murder. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Adkins will be sentenced in March.
