CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A third person has been arrested in connection with a brutal beating in downtown Charleston.
Denzil Weatherspoon, 21, was arrested Tuesday afternoon and charged with malicious wounding.
Police tell WSAZ.com that Ryan Lynch became involved in a fight with several teenagers outside of the Charleston Town Center Mall last week.
Weatherspoon says he stepped in to try and protect the teens.
Weathersoon told our cameras, ""He shouldn't of hit those kids. He shouldn't of hit those kids and it wouldn't have never got to this point."
Police say Weatherspoon hit Lynch with a hammer several times, causing some very serious head injuries.
"This individual that we've arrested today intervened," Charleston Police Lt. Steve Cooper said. "Just because he saw the fight going on and pulled a hammer. He struck the man several times, including the claw end of the hammer that he actually slammed into the man's skull. "
Lynch is still recovering in the hospital.
Petitions for malicious wounding have been filed against two other teens in connection with the case.
