Timing of Storm Difficult for School Districts

Updated: Fri 9:07 PM, Jan 25, 2013

PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Storms like Friday's present quite a dilemma for school administrators.

With the snow slated to start just after kids got in the classroom Friday morning, deciding when to cancel classes meant looking at a number of factors.

As of 10:45 a.m. Friday, WSAZ.com had 55 schools that had closed completely for the day and 27 that were letting out early.

Putnam County was one of the last of our major districts to make the call. Administrators told WSAZ.com they wanted to make sure they made the best decision to keep students safe.

For some parents, just picking up their kids from school was a little nerve wracking.

"I was pulling around my neighborhood and I put on the brakes, and the brakes were gripping and everything ... but I just kept going," mom Jennifer Kidd said.

"I had four-wheel drive kick in one time just on the flat ground," Ervin Cross said. "So, it's slick."

At Scott Teays Elementary School in Putnam County, kids got out just before 12:30 p.m. Some parents didn't even want to wait that long.

"I think it's OK that they went ahead and had school, but I wish that they would've called them out about 10:30," Chastity Moore said.

“I'm tempted to walk around and just get him now because it keeps coming down,” Kidd said.

Putnam County administrators told WSAZ.com's Lauren Schmoll they spent most of the morning on the roads and made the call to dismiss early, about an hour after the snow started falling there.

WSAZ.com also talked to Cabell County which spoke with the National Weather Service to help them time their dismissal.
