HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- They're called rookies, and Thursday they have to accend a ladder more than 100 feet into the sky.
It's traing day for 10 new recruits on the Huntington Fire Department and it's time to turn the book knowledge into hands on experience, according to Captain Jan Rader with Huntington Fire Department.
Rader says the training will expose recruits to many aspects of the job but also teach them a little about themselves.
"I think that they're learning a lot more about themselves. They're going to see the best that life has to offer and the worst that life has to offer and they're going to learn how to deal with the bad situations that they're going to see," said Rader.
Thursday, recruits had to climb the ladder truck to get used to the physical demands and working at heights.
The training lasts for six weeks before the recruits are placed on a truck.
