UPDATE 12/30/13 @ 2 p.m.
LEWIS COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Funeral arrangements have been set for a mother and son who died in a house fire on Christmas.
Lewis County Sheriff Johnny Bivens says Marilyn Fannin, 84, and Daniel Fannin, 65, both died after a fire at their home on Montgomery Road in Garrison, Kentucky.
Investigators believe the fire started in a space heater in the home.
A joint funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 31, at Globe Family Funeral Chapel in Garrison at 2 p.m. Visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. for family and friends to pay respects.
Sheriff Johnny Bivens says when firefighters arrived on scene they saw heavy smoke and fire.
Bivens says 84-year-old Marilyn Fannin was found alive but unconscious inside the home and was transported to Southern Ohio Medical Center where she later died from her injuries. Her son, 65-year-old Daniel Fannin was later found dead inside the home.
The fire was reported just before 11 p.m. Wednesday at the home in the 1200-block of Montgomery Road in Garrison.
Marty Strong, Garrison Fire Department Chief, says the fire started somewhere around a space heater found in a bedroom.
“It either shorted out or clothing or something, bed covers, whatever it was, fell against it and caught on fire,” says Strong.
Neighbors say they are in shock. “I was scared to death, there were flames shooting 300 to 400 feet into the air,” says Dan Kamer. “All you could see was blue lights and red lights and flames, something you’re not expecting to see on Christmas.”
Strong says this isn’t the first time he has seen a fire on Christmas and the thought is always in mind.
“There’s always that fear, and we’ve had a fire on Christmas before,” says Strong. “This is the first fatality on Christmas. It’s just a terrible loss for the family and for the community.”
Strong says they were well liked people and that he’s known them his entire life.
“They were long term residents here,” says Strong. “It’s just a tragic thing."
