UPDATE 3/24/14 @ 5:50 p.m.
SCIOTO COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A fire chief is in stable condition after he was injured when the tanker he was in flipped Saturday afternoon.
Another firefighter also was taken to the hospital. He was treated and released.
The two are with the Vernon Township Volunteer Fire Department in Wheelersburg, Ohio.
The crash happened about 4 p.m. Saturday along Turkey Foot Road, just as they were returning to the station following a call to a house fire.
A spokesperson said the pumper's rear tire went off the road, causing it to overturn.
The truck had just refilled its water and fuel supply when the accident happened, causing them to lose 1,000 gallons of water and 50 gallons of fuel, meaning they now only have 3,000 gallons of water available to battle fires.
"Water is always key to putting out any type of fire, and out here we have hydrants spread so thin you need that amount of water once you get there because you have to wait on other water from other trucks or other departments," said Vernon Township VFD Assistant Fire Chief Ricky Henderson.
That was the only pumper the station had, so the Green Volunteer Fire Department has loaned the Vernon VFD a pumper.
The assistant chief says residents shouldn't worry because they still will be able to battle fires with the borrowed pumper.
The firefighters were with the Vernon Township Volunteer Fire Department in Wheelersburg, Ohio. The accident happened along Turkey Foot Road about 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
A spokesperson for the fire department says the firefighters were returning to Station 2 after getting their truck cleaned at Station 1 following a mutual aid call in South Webster.
Tiffany House says the accident happened when the pumper’s rear wheel went off the road, causing the truck to overturn.
House says Fire Chief Paul Davis remains in a Huntington hospital but is expected to be released. The other firefighter was treated and released.
The damaged truck was the only pumper at Station 2. The Green Volunteer Fire Department has loaned the department a pumper so Station 2 will have firefighting capabilities.
