MORGANTOWN, W.Va (WSAZ) - The United Mine Workers is speaking out about a memo that has been posted at the Upper Big Branch mine in Raleigh County.
UMW spokesperson Phil Smith says the memo was posted by Alpha Natural Resources the day it bought out Massey Energy.
Smith believes the memo is meant to discourage workers from unionizing.
The memo says that signing a union authorization card is like signing a blank check, and it reminds workers that they can refuse to sign.
A spokesperson for Alpha Natural Resources says it's not unusual for mine operators to remind workers of their rights.
