PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The shooting death of a man in Putnam County is still under investigation.

Deputies tell WSAZ.com the man killed was Curtis Adams. Deputies say Adams had been in jail for domestic violence but was released in December.

Deputies say early Saturday morning Adams went to his former girlfriend's house where he kicked in the door. The former girlfriend then shot Adams with a shotgun. The two continued to struggle in the house and the former girlfriend has minor injuries.

"There's been a long history of domestic violence with this couple," said Putnam County Sheriff's Department, Cpl T.C. Mitchell.

Adams and his cousin, who was babysitting, ran out of the house and flagged down a passing car and put Adams in it. Deputies say the driver of the car dropped Adams off at the Route 34 Volunteer Fire Department where he later died.

"Very rarely do we get someone who is shot in the occurrence of a domestic violence thing," said Cpl. Marshall.

Five children were in the house sleeping at the time of the shooting ranging in ages 2 to 12 years old. Deputies say Adams and the former girlfriend have at least one child together.

"I just feel so sorry for the kids," said Alan Craig, a neighbor.

Deputies investigated the scene Saturday morning. Officials confiscated the shotgun and as well as a pistol from the house.

"Looking for any kind of gun casing, bullet holes, trajectories, things of that nature, blood patterns," said Cpl. Marshall.

The former girlfriend is still being questioned. The case will be presented to a grand jury to see if any charges are warranted.
