RICHWOOD, W.Va. (AP) - Richwood is relying on state police and sheriff's deputies for law enforcement after dissolving its police department.

Mayor Bob Johnson says that the city's police officers weren't certified.

That means they couldn't perform essential duties such as making arrests or carrying firearms.

Johnson says he's working to restore the four-member police department.

The City Council's action came earlier this month.

Last week, state police arrested a former officer in the December theft of prescription pain pills from a police evidence room.
