SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Numbers are in for crashes and other motor vehicle related incidents that happened statewide in West Virginia during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend from Nov. 27 to Dec. 1.

“The reported activity for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend is somewhat disheartening," West Virginia State Police Sgt. Michael Baylous said in a prepared release. "When considering the total number of DUI arrests and alcohol-related collisions, it is clear that some people are either not getting the message or are completely apathetic about highway safety. The unacceptable behavior of these folks continues to put their own lives and the lives of countless others in harm’s way. There are no legitimate excuses for such behavior.”

West Virginia State Police compiled the following statistics:

  • Fatal crashes -- 2

  • Fatalities -- 2

  • Fatalities with seatbelts -- 0

  • Alcohol-related collisions -- 7

  • Total Collisions -- 93

  • DUI arrests -- 44

  • Speeding citations -- 1,198

  • Seatbelt citations -- 245

  • Child restraint citations -- 13

  • Motorists assists -- 500
