UPDATE 11/20/12 @ 3:40 p.m.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Drivers will soon have a new tool that will help them get from place to place.

Crews across West Virginia are putting up 511 signs along all the major interstates and highways.

The signs serve as a reminder to drivers they can call 511 and find out about accidents, construction projects and road conditions.

However, the system is not operational yet.

The state's new 511 system is expected to launch sometime next month.

ORIGINAL STORY
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- State regulators are giving the Division of Highways the green light to implement a free telephone traffic information system for travelers.

The Public Service Commission approved the 511 system on Thursday.

The new system will provide information about accidents, construction, weather and other events that affect traffic across the state.

The Federal Communications Commission set aside the three-digit 511 code in 2000 to allow states to develop telephone systems that provide free travel information.

In its order, the PSC says all wireline carriers operating in the state will have to program their switching equipment so 511 calls are properly routed.

No additional costs will be passed on to taxpayers because the DOH will pay for the system.
