FRANKLIN FURNACE, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Customers of Scioto Water, Inc. are being warned to watch their bank accounts for suspicious activity.

Sometime between 6:30 p.m. Monday and 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, thieves broke into the company's main billing office at 4707 Gallia Pike in Franklin Furnace.

The company says burglars broke in through a side entrance, disabled the security system and ransacked several offices. They eventually made off with a small safe that contained cash and checks from customers whose payments were processed Monday.

Scioto Water says it has a list of customers whose payments were taken, and are attempting to notify those customers to closely monitor their bank accounts for any suspicious activity. Area banks have also been notified.

The company's phone lines were also cut during the break-in, so Scioto Water, Inc. is unable to receive or make any phone calls at this time.

The Scioto County Sheriff's Office is handling the investigation.
