Voters Prep for Wayne Co. School Bond Decision Again

KENOVA, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Tuesday is a big day for voters in Wayne County. A bond, that hasn't been a popular proposal in the past, is on the ballot again.

It's a bond that means new construction to two schools and improvements to another.

If the bond passes, it paves the way to build new C-K and Crum elementary schools and add six new classrooms to Wayne High School.

On Monday, the streets of Kenova were packed with supporters of the bond. Students, teachers and parents were making a big buzz during a parade, as they were on their way to an election eve block party.

Those in attendance hope the third time is a charm and say students are getting upset, worried about whether or not they will have a school to go to.

"People don't realize these kids know what's going on," said Missy McChristian. "They've been really stressed about it. People as young as kindergarten age ask a lot of times, what's going on with our school?"

Lonnie Napier lives in Wayne, and says he all for building new schools, but thinks there has to be another way do it.

"I believe they need these schools," Napier said. "But they need to stay out of the working people's pockets."

McChristian says considering the big picture, the sacrifice is small.

"The yearly tax is as much as what it would cost you to go out to dinner once or twice a year," McChristian said.

An amount that Napier says is too much.

"A little bit to the may not seem a lot, but it seems a lot to people who don't make a lot of money or don't have a lot," Napier said. "It' s rough."

People on both sides of the issue agree that the people of Wayne County are part of one county and need to work together to get issues settled.
