Charleston, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Once the water ban is lifted where you live, you have to flush your water before using it again.

Jeff McIntyre, president of West Virginia American Water, says there's a specific process you need to follow.

First, flush all of your hot water taps for 15 minutes. Then, turn them off.

Then, flush your cold water taps for 5 minutes and turn them off.

After that, flush your outside taps for 5 minutes.

McIntyre says you also need to run empty cycles of your appliances to clear any residue. So, run your washer once without clothes in it and run your dishwasher once without dishes.
