Winterizing Your Car

HUNTINGTON, W.Va., (WSAZ) -- Santa has made his list and checked it twice.

But before you head to grandmas this holiday season there are a few things you need to check on your list of car care.

Ernie Perry owns Ernie's Automotive Center in Huntington.

He suggests checking your tire pressure, your car lights, and the fluids in your vehicle not just to prepare it for the cold weather, but also for a road-trip.

"Especially during the holidays with a lot of traffic, they need to get the car completely checked out, from front to back, the lights, breaks, all that," Perry said.

He also suggests taking a look at your tires to make sure they will provide you with enough traction on slippery roads.

Triple A recommends putting a few extra items in your car in the event that the roads get so bad you get stuck. It was a reality for people on the West Virginia Turnpike back in December of 2009. People were stuck in their cars for about 24 hours because a heavy snowfall shutdown the Turnpike.

Items you might want to throw in your trunk include bottled water, some food, warm blankets and clothes, a flashlight and extra batteries.
