UPDATE 11/11/13 @ 6 p.m.
CLENDENIN, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Loretta Putillion says she never saw the signs.

"I feel empty, hurt, and sad," she said.

Her mobile home along Maywood Avenue in Clendenin was the scene of tragedy Friday night. Police say they found a man, Chad Elmore, dead inside one bedroom with needles and syringes near his body.

Loretta knew him as the boyfriend of her granddaughter, Melissa Putillion. The couple lived together in the trailer with their son -- a baby police say was put in danger.

Officers say they found drug paraphernalia scattered all around the infant's room, including a needle and a syringe on top of his mattress.

"The little child could get in there and pick up a needle ... he doesn't know any better," Clendenin Police Chief David Brinckman said.

Melissa was arrested and charged with child abuse and neglect. Police say she admitted to taking drugs that night and to buying heroin on a regular basis.

Loretta says even though she lived with the couple, she never knew the height of their addiction problems -- or what the baby had been exposed to.

"When I walked into that room, I thought I was going to die," she said. "I mean, you can't believe. I had no reason to go back and bother them [before], they're private. But now, I wish I did."

Police say the baby was taken away by Child Protective Services (CPS).

They say they had responded to several calls involving that mobile home before, and had even arrested Elmore on domestic battery charges.

Officers are awaiting reports from the coroner. They say they're following up with leads on who sold him drugs.

They say if overdose is determined to be the cause of death, they will charge that person with first-degree murder.

CLENDENIN, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A woman is facing charges after her boyfriend was found dead in a home on Maywood Avenue in Clendenin.

Clendenin Police say they found Chad Elmore dead on November 8th. He was lying on a bed with several syringes and needles near his body.

While police searched the home, they also found a needle and syringe on the mattress of a baby bed and one underneath it, according to the criminal complaint.

Police say Elmore's girlfriend, Melissa Putillion admitted to taking heroin earlier in the day. According to the criminal complaint, she also admitted to taking two Roxycodone pills and smoking marijuana.

She also told police she and Elmore had been buying heroin twice a week from a woman in Pinch for the past year.

Putillion told police she had complete custody of the baby who lived in the home. CPS was called and the child was put into protective custody.

Putillion has been charged with child neglect creating the risk of injury.

She is out of jail on bond.
