UPDATE 7/12/13 @ 11 a.m.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- New details are being released about a disturbing case involving the death of a little boy.

West Virginia State Police say Levi Burroughs, 8, of Braxton County, was found dead in this home on Wednesday afternoon.

A hospice worker found the boy during a welfare check.

During a news conference Friday morning , troopers say Levi suffered from a disease called Hurler Syndrome which affects the organs and causes them to shut down.

State Police say they believe Levi may have been dead for days and his body had started to decompose.

Levi's mother, Valarie Brown was arrested and charged with child neglect resulting in death.

Troopers say she failed to get Levi the care he needed.

"How sad is it when we get a reminder like this, we don't need reminders, but we get a reminder that here's a child in their last hour, they were in conditions, they weren't in a loving and compassionate environment. This child died alone," Sgt. Michael Baylous said.

State police say they are waiting for Levi's autopsy to come back to see if more charges will be filed.

Brown is being held at the Central Regional Jail on a $100,000 bond.

UPDATE 7/11/2013@11:25 p.m.
BRAXTON COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A community is dealing with shock and grief after state police found a child dead inside his Sutton home and put his mother behind bars.

Valarie Brown is charged with child neglect resulting in death after troopers say they found her eight-year-old son dead inside the home on Salt Lick Road.

The boy had been wrapped up inside a blanket and appeared to be decomposing, according to the criminal complaint.

"I can't imagine it happening here this close to us," neighbor Tim Carte said.

State Police say they accompanied a hospice worker to the house for a welfare check on the boy. They say Brown initially told them her son wasn't home but later let them inside, asking them "not to hurt him."

Some neighbors such as Lacie Rose say they had never seen the boy before and didn't even know Brown had a son.

"She didn't have any toys in her yard or anything like that," Rose said. "I know she's not very nice to her dogs...they're constantly tied up on her porch."

Neighbor Paul Cogar says Brown mostly kept to herself, but that his limited view of her struck him as strange.

"Sometimes she'd be out there at night, walking around and talking to herself," he said.

It's not clear right now how long the boy was left in the home.

State Police say they plan to release more information Friday morning at a press conference.
