Working in the Frigid Cold

Posted: Tue 8:18 PM, Jan 22, 2013

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The bitter cold is taking its toll on workers whose job involves being outside no matter what the weather.

City workers tell WSAZ.com they're actually thankful it's just cold because the rain and snow bring an entire other set of challenges.

Garbage cleanup crews say it's a must to break out the hats, gloves and boots to keep warm -- covering all extremities.

It's important to dress in layers to avoid getting frostbite or hypothermia.

Medical professionals say you should avoid caffeinated drinks like coffee and go for water or sports drinks instead. It's also a good idea to eat plenty of carbohydrates like pasta.

Workers say when they're warm and bundled up, they actually don't mind working.

"The city provides us with the right clothing -- boots and gloves and stuff so they do a good job of taking care of us, so we just look forward to coming to work," one worker said.

It's easy to hear from the driver behind the wheel of the heated garbage truck, but for the workers outside -- they're cold.

"As long as my hands stay warm and my feet stay warm, I'm alright," another worker said.

For some construction workers, they spent the days taking the outside work inside with the heat -- more tolerable places.

"You just want to take a few breaks and find a place to keep warm," construction worker Robin Pack said.

Workers suggest stick to being outside only during the the warmest part of the day. Also, let others know where you're going before you leave.
