CROSS LANES, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A wrong turn for one truck driver sent 150 gallons of diesel spilling into a Cross Lanes parking lot Tuesday afternoon.

It happened about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday along Big Tyler Road.

The driver of the truck, Stephon Hairston, said the incident happened as he was trying to make a delivery to The Rice Bowl restaurant.

To avoid two parked cars, he says he was forced to make a narrow turn. But instead of hitting either of the parked cars, he hit the curb, which punctured his tank.

“I felt the truck get caught on the curb and I pulled off but by that time it was already too late, there was already fuel coming out of my tank,” Hairston said.

Firefighters used absorbent pads and placed sand in the parking lot to soak up the diesel. They tell WSAZ.com no one was in danger.

“[Diesel] is flammable but with the conditions today we got low humidity and things like that, so the weather conditions actually helped on this incident,” James Hill of the Tyler Mountain Volunteer Fire Department said.

Crews did not close roads because of the incident, making the spill more of a clean-up mission than cause for concern.
