UPDATE 9/14/12 @ 5 p.m.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- On Wednesday, one convenience store clerk did what few others do -- he fought back.
That struggle with two armed robbers ended up helping police; it gave them one of the weapons used in the crime.
Police think the same duo hit the same store a few weeks earlier. And, they're asking for your help to catch these crooks.
By day, the Huntington Speedway up 5th Street hill at the Cabell-Wayne County line stays busy, in the wee hours before dawn -- not as much.
And it was about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday when two armed hooded men, one maybe in his mid-20s, one older in his 50s, entered the store and demanded cash from the clerk and started stealing cigarettes.
Huntington Police Department Detective Chris Sperry says one suspect got greedy and set his gun on the counter, and that’s when the clerk grabbed the weapon and a struggle began.
“I put myself in his shoes," Sperry said.
"What would you do?" WSAZ.com's Randy Yohe asked.
"They make you lie down on the floor and say, 'I’m going to shoot you.'
I’m not saying it's right, but he did no want to die,” Sperry said.
In the struggle, one robber's hoodie came down and a glimpse of his face is visible as the pair fled.
Another tape is from the same Speedway early the morning of July 30. It involved a different clerk -- but again two armed hooded men stealing cash and cigarettes.
Sperry says police have reason to believe the crimes are connected.
Sperry says the clerk getting the weapon may help make an ID.
The detective says now he needs some help from the public -- from you.
“We're hoping somebody does not like them, maybe knows them, just does not think it's right.” Sperry said.
Police can send any DNA found on the gun to a database, which could help identify who bought and owns the weapon.
It happened about 3:30 a.m. Thursday at the Speedway on 5th Street Road when two men walked into the store, pulled out what appeared to be a black semi-automatic handgun and demanded cash.
According to the report, as the men began taking money and several packs of cigarettes, one of the suspects put the gun on the counter. They say the clerk then grabbed the gun, and a brief struggle began with the suspects.
During that struggle, the hooded sweatshirt on the on men fell down and a brief glimpse of his face was caught on surveillance video. It is believed one of the men was in the 50’s and the other in his 20 to 30’s.
Officers say the gun turned out to be a pellet gun.
Police tell WSAZ.com the men may be responsible for another armed robbery at the same convenience store earlier this year.
Anyone with information on the suspects is asked to call Huntington Police.
