22 Arrested in Wayne County Drug Roundup

WAYNE COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Wayne County Sheriff's deputies spent the day Tuesday going door-to-door for a drug roundup.

The roundup targeted heroin users.

"The heroin that we're getting in this area is extremely dangerous because it's home cooked, and you don't know exactly what they're putting into it," said Robert Perry with the West Virginia State Police.

That drug put 22 people in handcuffs Tuesday, which came as a surprise to neighbors.

"I'm actually shocked," said a neighbor who lives nearby. "I really didn't think it was this close to home."

Even some of those arrested like Daniel Lee Maxwell were surprised. While being arrested, we asked him why he thought he was being picked up. He said, "Ain't got no clue."

Yet, what police and locals fear are the dangers drugs can bring.

"Anything could've happened. My kids could have been in the crossfire or something, or somebody else's kids," a neighbor said.

State police aided deputies in the roundup. Officers collected heroin, as well as pills and guns, and they say Wayne County is part of a bigger picture of drug abuse.

"We're trying to send a message out not only to the people we're trying to arrest today, but anybody else that we come in contact with that might be doing the same activity," Perry said.

The roundup is the result of a three month investigation. Deputies say roundups like this protect kids in the county.

"As an officer and deputy sheriff, it's our responsibility to make every effort to remove the threat from those kids," said Mark Bradshaw with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.

Just a few of the charges they will face are possession of an illegal substance, drug trafficking and conspiracy.
