Donations Down at Local Charities

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- An approaching winter storm Friday had some people scrambling to help local charities.

Meanwhile, the need is as much as 20 percent greater than this time last year, and the donations are down.

This weekend is the deadline for the Salvation Army's Angel Tree program, which provides gifts for children who otherwise would not receive anything. In Lincoln County, W.Va., alone, more than 100 names never were pulled from the trees.

In Chesapeake, Ohio, a community center that helps the people of Lawrence County has several food baskets to be distributed during the weekend. Its volunteers are urging people to consider a simple donation that could make a big difference to families coming in this weekend looking for help.
