UPDATE: Edens Sentenced in Ironton Shooting Death

IRONTON, Ohio (WSAZ) – The Huntington man who agreed to a plea deal in the death of 19-year-old A.J. Wells, of Ironton last summer learned his prison sentence.

Last month, Charles Edens pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death.

Thursday, Edens was sentenced to a combined 14 year for the shooting and gun charge. That is the maximum sentence he could receive.

The shooting happened near the intersection of 8th and Madison Streets in Ironton on August 30.



UPDATE 1/26/12
IRONTON, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A man from Huntington will not stand trial for the murder of an Ironton man.

Charles Edens, 22, was charged with the shooting death of 19-year-old A.J. Wells, of Ironton, back on August 30.

Wednesday, Edens agreed to a plea deal that allowed him to plead guilty to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter in the case, according to the Ohio Attorney General's Office which handled the prosecution of the case.

Edens will be sentenced on February 9. He could spend up to 14 years in prison -- 11 years on the voluntary manslaughter plea and 3 years because a gun was used.

The shooting happened near the intersection of 8th and Madison Streets at 10:13 p.m.

Wells died about an hour later at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell, Ky.

Edens turned himself into police shortly after the shooting.

A grand jury originally indicted Edens on one count of murder with a gun specification, one count of murder, one count of felonious assault, one count of tampering with evidence and one count of having a weapon under a disability.

IRONTON, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A trial date has been set for a Huntington man charged in the shooting death of an Ironton man.

Charles Edens’ trial will begin November 21 in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court.

Edens, 22, is charged with the murder of 19-year-old AJ Wells of Ironton on August 30.

The shooting happened near the intersection of 8th and Madison Streets at 10:13 p.m.

Wells died about an hour later at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell, Ky.

Edens turned himself into police shortly after the shooting.

UPDATE 9/1/11 @ 11:24 a.m.
IRONTON, Ohio (WSAZ) -- "Charles Edens I hope you’re happy, you killed my son". Those were the words Mary Gilmore yelled out in court Thursday morning when she saw the man charged in the murder of her son.

Edens, 22, of Huntington, was in Ironton Municipal Court Thursday to be arraigned for the murder of AJ Wells.

Wells, 19, of Ironton, was shot to death in the 600 block of South 8th Street at 10:13 p.m. Wednesday night.

He died just before 11:30 p.m. at a hospital in Russell, Ky.

During the hearing, Edens’ bond was set at $250,000. His next court hearing is for September 8th.

Mary Gilmore says her son was a good person, but got messed up with the wrong crowd. Gilmore says the last time she saw her son he was laying in the street dead. She said she has no idea why this happened or what the shooting was about, "fighting is one thing but killing someone is different".

Chief Carey says he believes the two men knew each other. He is not releasing a motive for the shooting.

According to the criminal complaint, Wells was shot with a .38cal handgun.

Edens is being held in the Lawrence County Jail.



UPDATE: 9/1/11 @ 3:50 a.m.
IRONTON, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Ironton Police Chief Jim Carey tells WSAZ.com the victim of a shooting in Ironton Wednesday night has died.

Carey says 19-year-old AJ Wells of Ironton, died just before 11:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell, Ky.

The shooting happened near the intersection of 8th and Madison Streets at 10:13 p.m.

Carey says the shooting suspect is 22-year-old Charles Riley Edens. Edens turned himself into police shortly after the shooting.

He has been charged with murder. He is expected to be arraigned later today (Thursday).

Carey says he believes Edens was currently living in Huntington, but that he was originally from Ironton.

The Chief says investigators believe several shots were fired. He does not know if Wells was shot more than one time.

He says it appears the two men did know each other .

The Chief says there are no other suspects.

Edens is being held in the Lawrence County Jail.

Police are not releasing information about a motive, or any details surrounding the circumstances of the shooting.

IRONTON, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A man was shot late Wednesday night in Ironton and taken to the hospital, Ironton Police tell WSAZ.com.

They say it happened at 10:13 p.m. near the intersection of 8th and Madison streets.

The extent of the man's injuries was unknown.

Other details also were unavailable late Wednesday.
