HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Police are looking into the death of baby at the Huntington City Mission Project Hope House.
The incident was reported about 9 a.m. Monday.
According the mission officials, the mother notified staff that her baby had stopped breathing in its sleep. Staff members then called 911, and the baby was pronounced dead at the scene.
City Mission Executive Director, Pastor Pete Davidson, says the mother and baby had been staying at the shelter for seven months since the baby was born prematurely at a local hospital. While police are still investigating, Davidson says he has no reason to suspect foul play.
“The detectives said there could be 500 scenarios about what happened and you can't guess at this. Only God knows what happened and the medical examiner will do his job. Of course, the mother is very distraught," said Davidson.
7th Avenue in front of the mission was closed to traffic during the initial investigation.
The State Medical Examiner will determine a cause of death.
