CABELL COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Two separate beatings at gas stations in Cabell County during the past few days have police on alert.

The latest beating happened Sunday night at a service station in the Barboursville area. A 17-year-old boy said he was getting out of his car when -- for no apparent reason -- a man approached him and hit him in the face a few times, leaving him with a broken nose.

In another incident, Rick Yates says he was at a station in West Huntington last week when a man and woman asked him for a ride. When he said no, they attacked -- pulling Yates to the ground and kicking him in the face.

The suspects then stole Yates’ car keys and took off. He suffered a broken jaw from the incident.

Sherri West, mother of the teen beating victim, said, “It’s a shame we live in a society where you have to look over your shoulder, but apparently you do. It's hitting close to home, and you just need to be cautious."

Police have been looking at surveillance video from both gas stations. There’s no word on whether these two crimes may be connected.
