HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Despite a strong showing from the Highlawn community at Monday night’s Huntington City Council meeting, council members approved a plan to rezone property for a proposed gun store.

The property is directly adjacent to St. Mary’s Medical Center in the 2900 block of 1st Avenue. Highlawn residents also told council members it is near a school bus stop and a church.

While neighbors were disappointed by council’s decision to rezone the property from residential to commercial status, store owner Brian Galligan says they have nothing to fear.

He said most of his work will be as a gunsmith – fixing weapons and dealing with specialty items.

“I’m a Glock dealer and basically I’ll have a few Glocks in there,” Galligan said.

Highlawn resident Jane Peterson told council members she's disturbed by their support of the business.

"Every single one of you represents the citizens of Huntington, and you're not representing the people," she said.
