Dan D'Antoni to be Named MU Men's Basketball Head Coach

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Marshall University has announced that Los Angeles Lakers assistant and former Marshall player Dan D'Antoni will become the next head basketball coach of the Thundering Herd.

D'Antoni's brother, Mike, is the head coach of the Lakers and was openly courted by Marshall Athletics Director Mike Hamrick for the job.

The Lakers coach, however, is still under contract in Los Angeles.

Dan D'Antoni has been an NBA assistant for nine years with his brother in Phoenix, New York, and Los Angeles.

He played for the Thundering Herd from 1966 to 1970.

He also was a long time head coach at Socastee High School in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

He'll be introduced at a news conference on Friday in Huntington.
