Conned Out of Cash in Electronics Scam

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A man who says he was conned out of cash is now hoping others won't fall victim.

“There's a sucker born every day,” Paul Wilson said. “I'm that sucker."

Wilson says Wednesday he was at the Speedway on 3rd Avenue in Huntington when he was approached by two men riding in a red SUV.

"They're two young men dressed in regular polo type shirts,” he said. “It was a nice SUV, very nice people."

The men had boxes of electronics in their car.

"They asked me if I was in the market for a surround sound, which I am," he said.

They told Wilson they worked for an audio company and were overstocked, and what they didn't sell would end up in a basement.

They showed him what they said was a wireless surround sound system.

"It was very legitimate,” Wilson said. “I made them an offer. They took it."

However, when Wilson later took it out of the box at his office, he discovered what he bought wasn't what was advertised.

"They advertised it as being a wireless system,” he said. “As you can see from the back, it's not wireless."

He went online and found dozens of complaints from people as far away as Arizona who'd fallen victim to the same scheme.

"It's a shame people pray off of other people,” he said. “I guess there are people out there like that."

A medical sales rep, Wilson says he's not normally a gullible guy, and he's embarrassed these scammers got the best of him.

Now just wants to get the word out, hoping they won't successfully dupe anyone else.

Wilson says the scam cost him 200 dollars.
