Family Escapes House Fire in Huntington
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) --Two adults and child were able to escape a fire in their home in the Westmoreland section of Huntington Friday morning.
The fire happened in the 4000 block of Hughes Street. It was reported just after 7:30 a.m.
Firefighters say the fire started in a first floor utility room, but the whole house has smoke damage.
Wiliam Lee says he was in the house with his grandmother and his young son when the fire started.
Lee tells WSAZ.com that he came out of back bedroom and saw the fire near the furnace. He says his little boy was hiding under a bed. He got then him and his grandmother out of the house before trying to put the fire out with a broom. When that didn’t work, Lee says he called 911.
Lee also tells WSAZ.com that a cracker box near the furnace may have started the fire.
Lee was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.
There is no word from firefighters on what caused the fire.
The Salvation Army has been called to help the family now displaced by the fire.
