MILTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A volunteer firefighter has been hurt after losing control and crashing the fire truck he was driving.

The firefighter was from the Milton Volunteer Fire Department. He was the only person in the truck.

The accident happened just before 2 p.m. Friday in the 1800 block of Glenwood Road.

We’re told the volunteer firefighter was bringing the truck to the department’s Barkers Ridge garage following a fire earlier Friday.

The firefighter was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Dan Jackson was outside working and witnessed the crash.

"It was like a bomb exploded," he said. "it went through the air. Everything was going everywhere."

Jackson says it appears the truck first went slightly off the right side of then road, and then apparently the driver overcompensated, crossing over onto his left side, hitting a tree and rolling several times.

The fire truck was destroyed in the accident. Parts of it were left scattered in the area.

Assistant Fire Chief Bob Legg says this call got all their hearts racing.

"Adrenaline gets pumping a little bit harder when you hear it's one of yours," he said.
