HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A former nurse at a Huntington hospital will be heading to jail after pleading no contest to sexually abusing an elderly patient under his care.
In December 2011, Travis Scott Burdette, 37, of Salt Rock, was arrested and charged with two counts of sexual assault.
During a hearing Tuesday in Cabell County Circuit Court, Burdette pleaded no contest to the charges. He was then sentenced to 1 to 5 years on each count to be served consecutively.
Burdette does not have to report to jail until next Tuesday.
According to the criminal complaint, Burdette had sex with the patient twice without her consent.
Burdette was an LPN at Cabell Huntington Hospital at the time of the incident. He was immediately let go following his arrest.
Travis Burdette is charged with two counts of sexual assault.
He was arrested last week.
The assaults were reported when Burdette was an employee at Cabell Huntington Hospital.
He is no longer an employee there -- and is currently in jail.
The case has been turned over to the grand jury.
Huntington Police arrested Travis Scott Burdette, 36, of Salt Rock, Thursday on two counts of sexual assault.
They say he sexually assaulted an elderly female patient at the hospital twice over the weekend.
According to the criminal complaint, Burdette had sex with the patient without her consent.
Burdette told a magistrate during his arraignment Thursday afternoon that he is no longer an employee at the hospital. At the time of the incident, he was working as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
WSAZ has contacted Cabell Huntington Hospital for a statement. They said they will be releasing one soon.
Burdette faces 20 to 50 years behind bars and is being held in lieu of $300,000 cash-only bail.
Burdette was given a restraining order to stay off hospital property, in case he was able to post his bail.
Cabell Huntington Hospital released the following statement in response:
“We are currently assisting the Huntington Police Department in an investigation of an incident that occurred at our hospital.
Due to privacy concerns and the fact that this incident is still under investigation, we cannot provide any further comment at this time, other than to say we are shocked and saddened and we are taking this matter very seriously.
At the appropriate time, we will have more to say.”
