UPDATE 4/10/14 @ 7:10 p.m.
CABELL COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Cabell County Sheriff's officials said a man was shot while trying to break into someone's home.
Investigators said the shooting happened around 2 a.m. Thursday in the 5200 block of Route 10 in Cabell County.
The suspect, Ray Davis, had surgery Thursday following the shooting.
Investigators said the break-in may be motivated by drugs.
Neighbors said they're shocked this happened so close.
"I haven't locked my doors in 10 years, I will start locking them now," said J.R. Turpin, a neighbor.
The shooting taught J.R. Turpin a lesson.
He lives just a matter of feet from a home on Route 10 in Salt Rock, where a man was shot while breaking in.
"Hopefully it won't happen again," said Turpin.
Cabell County Sheriff's deputies said the suspect, Ray Davis, 26, of the Salt Rock area, tried to burglarize the home around 2 a.m. Thursday.
But investigator said Davis didn't get far.
"The homeowner used a shotgun and shot the individual," said Cabell County Sheriff, Tom McComas.
"He had a reason for it, he's a good guy," said Turpin.
Investigators said Davis ran from the scene to a waiting car.
"About 2 o'clock this morning a truck came down the road and it didn't go too far and turned back around," said Turpin.
Officials believe he also left behind evidence, including blood, a shoe, and a crowbar.
They said they don't know if anyone else was involved.
Shortly after, Davis showed up at the E.R.
"St. Mary's emergency room notified us that an individual had been brought in with gunshot wounds," said McComas.
Sheriff McComas said Davis was incoherent and injured, but he told his family what happened.
"He said I broke into a house and the guy shot me," said McComas.
He said as soon as Davis is discharged, he will be arrested.
As far as the homeowner, McComas said he believes he was justified in using deadly force, though the case will now head to the Prosecutor's office.
Sheriff's officials also believe Davis may be connected to at least one other burglary in the Salt Rock area.
According to the report, investigators found a checkbook, reported stolen, in Davis' belongings.
NewsChannel 3 reached out to the homeowner, he declined to comment.
The incident happened at a home in the 5200 block of W.Va. Route 10 about 2 a.m. Thursday.
Sheriff Tom McComas says the suspect, Ray Davis, 26, of Salt Rock, underwent surgery early Thursday at St. Mary’s Medical Center to remove gun shot pellets from his abdomen.
Sheriff McComas says the homeowner told deputies that after being shot, the suspect got into a waiting car located a short distance from the house.
McComas says deputies say they found blood leading away from the house, along with a crow bar.
The Sheriff says relatives brought Davis to the hospital and that he was incoherent when he arrived. McComas says the relatives told deputies that Davis told them he had broken into a house and was shot.
Davis will be charged when he is released from the hospital. He is currently in the custody of deputies at the hospital.
