Huntington Police Raid Apartment Building; One Arrested

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- For the second time in two days, Huntington Police and the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force raided an apartment building near Hal Greer Boulevard.

On Wednesday evening, Huntington Police arrested one man on marijuana possession charges and detained more than a dozen other people while executing a search warrant at the Oakview Apartments along Huntington Avenue.

"Earlier this afternoon, we received a call of shots fired here," Huntington Police Chief Skip Holbrook said. "it was not clear where the call came from in the building. It caused them {the officers} to look through several apartments in an effort to make sure we had no victims of gunfire."

Once inside, police say they found evidence of criminal activity and took the 13 people in the apartments into custody for questioning.

"They were all detained," Holbrook said. "They were all photographed, identified and released. If further investigation links them to any criminal activity, they will be charged."

Police say, not surprisingly, most of those detained were not helpful.

"What is troubling, but expected at the same time is the lack of cooperation from the folks participating in this criminal activity," Holbrook said. "it's disturbing and it's frustrating, but we're going to keep persevering. We'll win the battle."

Holbrook says his officers will now follow up with a nuisance letter to the owner of Oakview Apartments. That will require the owner to prove they are going to take care of the problem that led police to the property in the first place.

Police say many of those detained Wednesday are from the Detroit area, with several Huntington residents also involved.
