HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The scratches on his face and tear on his clothes told the story of a man on the losing end of a dogfight.
"The dog was actually pretty good," Thomas Chapman said after being arraigned in magistrate court.
Chapman is now facing more than a dozen charges. He’s accused of stealing two TVs from Wal-Mart and a hit and run.
Chapman was pulled over for multiple traffic stops Wednesday night but gave police his brother's name since he already had outstanding warrants.
After the Cabell County Sheriff's office figured out who this really was, they went to the mother of his children's home in West Pea Ridge suspecting he might be there.
Chapman’s own son ended up helping police catch him.
The sheriff says after investigators searched through the home and didn't find him, one of the deputies looked at Chapman's 2-year-old son and said, ‘Where's Daddy's hiding place?’ The toddler then pointed straight to a trap door.
Chapman had gone through that trap door and was hiding underneath the mobile home.
After Chapman refused to come out, they called in a K-9 unit.
"The individual was given 9 or 10 warnings,” Sheriff Tom McComas said. “He elected to not give up."
Then the hound, appropriately named Atack, went to work.
"The dog discovered the individual who did not readily surrender,” McComas said, “and the dog apprehended him by bite."
The sheriff says this is an example of how valuable K-9 units are.
"It goes to show the K-9 units are a very useful tool for law enforcement,” McComas said. “The officers didn't expose themselves to an unsafe environment.”
Chapman is charged with four counts of DUI, four counts of obstruction, and four counts of forgery of a public document, and filing a false report with an EMT.
Chapman is now being held on a $52,000 cash only bond.
