HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Ringing in the new year can be a fun time for anyone, but getting behind the wheel of a car after a few toasts can turn any fun time into a crime.

West Virginia State Police Trooper Will Hash is on a mission to crackdown on anyone drinking and driving during the holiday weekend.

"I'm not saying you can't go out and have fun," Hash said. "We encourage that, but be safe and be responsible. It's going to be a guarantee if you drink and you drive, you're going to go to jail."

West Virginia State Police Sgt. Robert Perry is putting in extra time to help with patrols. He's working on his day off to keep drunk drivers off the streets.

"Technically this is my day off," Perry said. "We are federally funded to do these patrols, so I'm out tonight just trying to make a little bit of a difference and trying to keep everybody safe."

The holiday weekend also means more help. Troopers from surrounding counties such as Wayne and Lincoln are in town to keep things safe -- extra help that Hash says really makes a difference.

"The more people you have on the road, as far as law enforcement, the more it's going to deter that and just like anywhere else you go to," he said. "But we're going to make a statement."

State troopers will be out in full force all weekend up through New Year's Day.
