Local Dentist's Ghost Story Featured on the Travel Channel

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Most people have trepidation about going to the dentist, but if you think a root canal is scary, wait until you hear what one dentist in Huntington says.

Friday night that dentist's office was featured on national television because of paranormal activity.

Dr. William Grimes bought a building on the 1100 block of 20th Street in 1973. That's when he says he had his first paranormal encounter when he saw the ghost of a little girl.

"She stood here in this doorway as I was working in the stairwell,” he said. “I finally understood what she looked like after seeing her quite a number of times, 20 or 30 times.”

A TV crew of about 20 people from “The Dead Files,” a show on the Travel Channel, spent a couple weeks in Huntington in June focusing on the apparitions at Dr. Grimes' office.

Grimes says he's seen several spirits there over the years, and he says most of the people who've worked with him have seen or heard them too.

"This stuff is real,” he said. “It's not imagined."

And how do people react when they find out a respected dentist believes he's seeing ghosts?

"I get two responses,” he said. “Both of them are at both ends of the scale. People are either appalled that I could believe something like this, or they are surprised, and they want to tell me their story."

The dentist says over the years some of his patients have stopped coming to him, not because of anything they've seen, but because of stories they've heard.

Grimes says the people with the show did research on the house and the area and even communicated with the ghosts, and they helped him better understand the mysteries that have surrounded him for decades.

He's hoping the show might inspire at least a few skeptics to have a little less certainty about whether or not they believe in ghosts.

The episode debuted Friday night at 10.

If you missed it, it’s scheduled to air again next Friday night at 11.
