Police: Drunk Driver Throws Guns From Truck During Police Chase

CABELL COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- West Virginia State Police say a driver threw two guns out the window of his truck during a police chase on I-64 in Cabell County Sunday afternoon.

Troopers arrested John Roberts, 38, of Kenova at the Merritt’s Creek exit (Exit 18) after he being pulled off the interstate.

According to the criminal complaint, the chase began near the 29 mile marker just before 3 p.m. when a trooper said he noticed a driver swerving several times and nearly hitting the guardrail and bridge dividers.

The troopers said when he activated his lights and sirens, the driver increased his speed forcing several’ drivers onto to the shoulder or into the left lane

Near the 20 mile maker, a Barboursville Police Officer tried to stop Roberts.

According to the criminal complaint, Roberts went onto to right shoulder and began swerving around traffic, nearly hitting several vehicles. He also increased his speed to nearly 90 miles per hour.

Near the mall, Roberts threw a .25 pistol out the passenger side window. The gun was quickly recovered by a Milton Police officer. According to the criminal complaint, Roberts then threw another gun out the window near Exit 18. That gun was recovered by a DNR officer.

Officers say once stopped, Roberts refused to cooperate and had to be physically removed from his vehicle. They also said he was clinching a thermos full of vodka.

Inside the truck, the officers say they found a box of .25 caliber ammunition and a bottle of vodka inside a kitchen pot full of ice.

According to the criminal complaint, Roberts failed three field sobriety tests and had BAC of .251.

Roberts was charged with DUI, Fleeing while DUI, and two counts of being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm.

In 1991, Roberts of convicted of robbery in Florida.

He is being held in the Western Regional Jail.
