UPDATE 6/7/12 @ 5:30 p.m.
WAYNE. W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The jury came to the quick decision of life in prison Thursday in the murder trial of a man who stabbed his former coach 43 times.

The jury convicted 53 year old Clinton Skeens of first degree murder in a half an hour.

Skeens admitted to killing Scott Jarrell on New Years Eve day in 2010.

From then until now, Jarrell’s family has endured unbearable sorrow.
They said now, they will remember not a horrible death, but a life well lived.

Clinton Skeens testified that insane hallucinations from good and bad angels led him to confront face to face, a mentor turned menace.
He said he accused him of being a CIA killer, then stabbed Scott Jarrell to death.

Jarrell's widow said she believes it was cold blooded murder.

“I think he came up behind him, I don't think my husband ever knew he was in the house. He showed no remorse in his voice," Carol Jarrell said. "It was a journey through hell for us to listen to the story he told.”

Jury foreperson Kevin Spence told WSAZ.com the ultra quick first degree murder conviction came from a great presentation by the state, from insufficient evidence from the defense to even consider any parole and he said that skeens confessed insanity was faked.

Prosecutor Tom Plymale said the motive for murder may have been as basic as armed robbery.

“He got something out of it," Plymale said. "He was without a job and no means of support, and was found with 900 dollars and a truck.”

“This has been horrible for us, why did he do it? He's just evil, just evil,” Carol Jarell said.

The first degree murder convection came with no mercy, meaning the 53 year old will never be eligible for parole.

Coach Jarrell’s widow said that if Clinton Skeens was ever allowed free in society again, he would be a danger to everybody.

WAYNE. W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The man convicted of stabbing his former football coach to death is heading to prison for life.

Clinton Skeens was sentenced Thursday afternoon, just hours after being found guilty for the murder of Jess "Scott" Jarrell.

It only took a jury 40 minutes Thursday morning to come back with a verdict in the case. They found him guilty of first degree murder with no mercy.

It took less time to come up with a sentence. Less than 20 minutes after the hearing started, Skeens was sentenced to life without parole in prison.

UPDATE 6/7/12 @ 11:42 a.m.
WAYNE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A jury has found Clinton Skeens guilty of 1st degree murder without mercy in the stabbing death of a former Wayne High School football coach.

Jess "Scott" Jarrell, 73, was stabbed 43 times at his home near Wayne on New Year's Eve 2010. Skeens was arrested several hours after the murder.

The jury got the case right before 11:00 a.m. Thursday and reached their verdict about 40 minutes later.

The jury’s other choices were to find Skeens guilty of 1st degree murder with mercy, 2nd degree murder without deliberation and premeditation, or they could have found him not guilty.

Jury foreperson Kevin Spence tells WSAZ.com the state presented a great and thorough case. He said the defense did not have sufficient evidence to even consider mercy and the jury did not buy into Skeens' story. Spence said it was filled with holes and not believable. He said the jury believed Skeens was faking insanity now and then.

WSAZ.com's Randy Yohe spoke with Coach Jarrell's widow, Carol Jarrell. She said this was a fair sentence for an evil man. Mrs. Jarrell tells WSAZ.com that Skeens' story was a journey through hell. She says her husband was likely killed by surprise, from the back.

Prosecutor Tom Plymale tells WSAZ.com that a possible motive in the murder was theft. He says Skeens stole Jarrell's truck and was found with $900 on him.

Skeens will be sentenced at 1 p.m.

"I went in the house and asked coach if he knew the CIA," Skeens testified. "He said no. I said, 'I have to kill you.' He said why? I said, 'Because you killed my family.' I stabbed him two or three times and I don't remember anything else about what happened there."

Skeens did not remember that Jarrell was stabbed 43 times. A state psychiatrist testified that Skeens is faking insanity and was competent at the time of Jarrell's death.

UPDATE 6/4/12 @ 6:10 p.m.
WAYNE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The trial is now underway for a man accused of stabbing his former high school football coach to death.

Clinton Skeens is charged in the murder of Jess “Scott” Jarrell.
Jarrell was stabbed 43 times at his home in Wayne County on Dec. 31, 2010.

Jury selection started last month for the trial to ensure it would start by Monday. WSAZ.com was in the courtroom, where the trial moved along quickly and may move quickly all week.

There was only one opening statement, and that came from the prosecution. The defense deferred its expected mental incompetency case involving Clinton Doug Skeens.

A motive for the killing hasn't been released, if a motive has been determined.

Jarrell was a beloved former coach, and his family had to bear down on the witness stand.

Scott Jarrell Jr. testified that as he was checking on his dad, who was not answering the phone that New Year's Eve day, he received a call from a state trooper, saying a Clinton Skeens had his father's missing truck.

Then, a son found his dad’s body.

”I said, 'Oh, my God,' " Scott Jarrell Jr. testified. "I looked through the sliding glass doors and I could see dad lying on the floor, between the dryer and the table. He looked like he had passed, but I had to check. So I checked for a pulse, and he was gone.”

In his opening statement, Wayne County Prosecutor Tom Plymale told the jury the evidence would show that the 53-year-old former Wayne High football player stalked, planned out, and then murdered his former coach.

“It was a culmination of events that ended with this man pursuing, finding and then killing Scott Jarrell," Plymale said.

A string of witnesses testified that weeks before the murder, Skeens asked around town where Jarrell lived.

The jury saw surveillance video from a Kroger store in Huntington, showing Skeens buying two knives -- one that prosecutors say was the murder weapon.

Plymale says DNA evidence showed Skeens had chili and ice cream at Coach Jarrell’s before leaving. He bought a lottery ticket right after the murder -- all before confessing to state police.

The jury saw Wal-Mart surveillance video showing Skeens buying 16-gauge shotgun shells right after the murder. Jarrell’s family says the only gun missing was a 16-gauge shotgun.

We’re told Skeens will take the stand in his own defense.

UPDATE 9/23/11 @ 11:30 p.m.
WAYNE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- You can almost bet in Wayne, where two or three guys gather, they're talking football. Nine times out of 10, those stories involve Coach Scott Jarrell.

Coach Jarrell -- a staple in the community -- was brutally murdered at the beginning of the year. The Wayne Pioneers remembered their former coach at their first home game Friday, not for the way he died, but the way he lived.

Decades of Coach Jarrell's former players and students met in their old cafeteria at Wayne High School before the game to swap stories and memories about the coach. At 7 p.m., the men took the field on the 50-yard line for a moment of silence in Coach Jarrell's honor.

"As an 18-year-old, you make pretty important decisions," Jeff Blatt said. "And he was quite the mentor for many folks, all the guys he's coached over the years."

Blatt's a 1976 graduate of Wayne. One of his proudest memories with Coach Jarrell was winning the last game of his high school career, against C-K High School, a team that went on to win the State Championship.

You can't find a person in Wayne who doesn't have a story about Coach Jarrell. You won't either; his legacy lives on through a scholarship in his name.

"My grandfather was known as Coach Jarrell, but growing up as his grandkid I learned at an early age education was everything," grandson Jack Dolance said. "I wouldn't be where I am today and I'm telling a story of everyone else here."

For more information about the scholarship, head to www.coachjarrell.com

The man accused of killing Coach Jarrell was also one of his Wayne football players. Clinton Skeens is still under mental evaluation after a judge ruled he had a mental disorder.

UPDATE 1/8/11 @ 10 p.m.
WAYNE COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- It's been a week of heartache for one community after losing a living legend.

Former Wayne High School football coach Scott Jarrell was brutally murdered last Friday.

Saturday friends and family said goodbye at the coach's funeral at the Wayne High School gymnasium.

Jarrell coached the Wayne Pioneers from 1966 to 1985 and had the school’s second-highest amount of victories at 102.

A couple of Jarrell's grandchildren gave heartfelt eulogies at the service, sharing what a deeply loving grandfather he was.

They said he had unmatched character and work ethic and was always encouraging them to work hard in school.

Many of his former football players were in attendance at the funeral.

They say even though it's been decades since they played for him, Jarrell's lessons remain an important part of their lives.

“He didn't just say it, he showed it,” former Wayne football player Shawn Cade said. “That's what a leader is. That's what a coach is: someone who not only just says what they believe, but they show it and lead by example. That's what Coach Scott Jarrell did.”

Jarrell also worked as a guidance counselor at Wayne High School.

He was buried at Bowen Cemetery.

UPDATE 1/7/11 @ 11:30 p.m.
By HANNA FRANCIS
WAYNE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- One week ago, the man an entire community knew simply as "Coach", was killed.

It was a brutal murder, an attack by a former player, that has left many, asking why. But Friday evening, the focus was on remembering -- and honoring Coach Scott Jarrell.

He was a football coach and a guidance counselor at Wayne High School for years. He was a caring man, his friends say, who helped shape the life of just about every person he met. In crowds of hundreds Friday night, those people came to say thank you.

"He was just a man that everybody respected and loved," Former WHS Coach George Brumfield said. "He taught me so many lessons in life: how to live, how to coach. There's so many lessons he taught me that I could never repay the man."

Coach Brumfield played for Jarrell, then coached with him. There will not be a football game on TV that won't remind him of his friend.

"When there's a good hit on the football field, I always think of him," Brumfield said. "He'd love the way that kid hit."

So popular and so beloved that Coach Jarrell's Pioneer followers came to pay their respects in shifts -- a capacity crowd in the gym, just yards away from Pioneer Field where Coach spent a life time.

He and his teams racked up almost too many wins to count. On the field, Coach Jarrell was tough, but fair. Off the field, he changed from competitive to compassionate. His real passion, though, was at home.

"His family was his first love. His wife Carol and his children. He loved them so much," Coach Brumfield said. "And football."

Usually in Wayne, it's the football team that draws a crowd on Friday night. This Friday, they came for the coach.

"In Wayne, we think we're special," Brumfield said. "Coach Jarrell was also special."

A funeral will be held for Coach Scott Jarrell at 11 a.m. Saturday. It also will be at Wayne High School. Jarrell will be buried at Bowen Cemetery in Wayne.

UPDATE 1/6/11 @ 6:30 p.m.
WAYNE, W.Va. (WSAZ) --Tonight, more disturbing details about what led to Coach Jarrell's death. It was enough to ignite an explosive outburst by family members in yesterday's preliminary hearing.
Reports of Clinton Skeens' disturbing behavior date back more than ten years. While plenty of questions remain, we are starting to get a clearer picture now of Clinton Skeens. It's a checkered past that only makes these current accusations that much more disturbing.

“Most likely, the fatal wound was a stab wound to the heart. Also, he had stab wounds to both lungs,” said WV State Trooper D.J. Chapman.

As state troopers detailed the murder scene during a preliminary hearing, Coach Scott Jarrell's son-in-law glares at the defendant with an unmistakable hatred.

“We received statements from several individuals in the Wayne area that Skeens was going almost door-to door asking if people knew where Coach Jarrell lived saying he's a good friend of his and he wanted to visit,” said Trooper Chapman.

According to testimony presented by Trooper Chapman, Skeens had been trying to locate Jarrell's home for several week's leading up to the murder. Even though Skeens played football for Jarrell nearly thirty years ago, no one can recall a relationship between the two recently.
It's just part of a disturbing trend with Skeens who has a list of misdemeanors including domestic battery, trespassing and domestic assault that date all the way back to 1999. Most recently, he was charged with stalking and harassment just last September. Then, he started showing aggressive behavior toward an ex-girlfriend from sixteen years ago. The two had initially rekindled a friendship several months earlier before Skeens became threatening.

Those charges involving the ex-girlfriend were dropped after she failed to show in court.

Back to this latest case, Trooper Chapman said Skeens initially approached him and confessed to killing Jarrell several hours after the murder. But, Skeens now denies that saying he doesn't remember that confession.
The case has now been sent to the grand jury, which meets in march.

UPDATE 1/5/11 @ 6:30 p.m.

The trial is set to begin Monday, March 7.

West Virginia State Police and Sheriff Deputies then had to wrestle the two men apart.

That man has been identified as Paul Morrison, Jarrell's son-in law.

Morrison was handcuffed and lead out of the courtroom.

The Sheriff says three other people were also taken into custody during the incident.

No word if any of the four faces charges in the incident.

Skeens is charged with the stabbing death of Scott Jarrell on New Years Eve.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Wayne High School gym. Burial will be in Bowen Cemetery.

UPDATE 1/3/11 @ 6:45 p.m.
WAYNE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- He was a beloved longtime coach and mentor to many in the community. But, one of his former players is now in jail charged with killing him.

It's a bizarre murder with no clear-cut motive. What we do know is a man is dead -- stabbed to death in his own home. His killer confessed to the murder.

"This is a man who was a longtime football coach where football was important and he was a guidance counselor, so he touched a lot of lives," said Thomas Plymale, Wayne County Prosecutor.

That's why the community of Wayne is struggling to understand why anyone would want to kill Scott Jarrell, the man everyone knew as simply "Coach".

"He made an impression wherever he went and it was a good impression," said Jack Dolance, Jarrell’s grandson.

But, apparently that impression soured for Clinton Douglas Skeens. He played under Jarrell about 30 years ago for the Wayne Pioneers football team. Now, he's in jail, charged with stabbing his coach and mentor to death in his own home.

"We're not aware of a clear motive at this point. The investigation is continuing," Plymale said.

Here's where things get really bizarre -- after allegedly committing the murder, Skeens pulled up to the Lavalette Water Office where a West Virginia State Police trooper was parked. Skeens got out of his truck, ripped his shirt off and confessed to the crime.

“It was discovered at that time that the suspect was in the victim's truck. So, the investigation began backwards from there to determine if the things he said were true,” Plymale said.

"He's the most gregarious man I've ever seen. I’ve never been anywhere where he didn't know everyone in the room. It amazed me,” Dolance said.

Dolance recalls a man larger than life. His grandfather coached football at Wayne High School for nearly 20 years. He also coached other sports and worked as a guidance counselor.

"He touched all our lives in a way that will be felt forever and we'll pass that on to our own children and grandchildren," Dolance said.

As for Skeens, he does not have a criminal record, and everyone is at a loss for why this happened.

Skeens is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Wednesday morning.

UPDATE 1/1/11 @ 8:45 p.m.
WAYNE, W. Va. (WSAZ) -- It's a murder investigation that's tearing at the seams of a tight-knit community.

"Coach Jarrell was part of the fabric of the community. He was the head football coach here for I think around 19 years so there's a lot of people who came in contact with him," said current Wayne Football Head Coach Tom Harmon.

From 1966 to 1985 Jess "Scott" Jarrell was the proud leader of the Wayne High School Pioneers. Off the field he was a guidance counselor.

"Not only was he a teacher, and a guidance counselor, a coach and all those things, he was a neighbor, so not too many times do you find someone who's affected that many people," said Harmon.

"Everybody just respected him he was your friend, your coach, and all the players that ever played for him just...they see him down the street they had to go talk to him...he was just a friendly guy," said former player David Morris.

His players say even after Jarrell gave up his post as head coach, he could still be found cheering the team on from the stands.

"He was always a pioneer and he loved it," said Morris.

"He was one of the first people that I talked to when I got the job here and nobody really had the insight that he did as far as staying in the community and coaching football for an extended period of time and he was always very supportive of anything that we tried to do," said Harmon.

Even in death, Jarrell continues to teach...leaving his lessons behind with those who love him.

"We're saddened by it, but I guess if there's a positive note you'd say about it, you'd say that some of lessons he taught over the years live on," said Harmon.

Gone in body, but alive in spirit. His legacy presses on in the hearts of anyone who crossed his path, on or off the field.

ORIGINAL STORY 1/1/11
WAYNE COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- West Virginia State Police have charged a Huntington man with murder.

Just after 10:00 Friday night, State Police went to a home on Wilson Creek in Wayne County where they found the body of 73-year-old Jess "Scott" Jarrell.

A news release from the West Virginia State Police says Jarrell died from an apparent stabbing.

Troopers charged Clinton Douglas Skeens. He's 52 years old and from Huntington.

According to the criminal complaint filed in Wayne County Magistrate Court, police learned of the incident around 6:50 Friday night when Mr. Skeens pulled along State Trooper in the parking lot of the Lavalette Water Company.

Troopers say that Skeens got out of the truck he was driving and began taking off his shirt. The trooper asked Skeens if he needed anything, he responded by asking the trooper if he knew who he was, according to the complaint.

The officer responded that he didn’t know him. Mr. Skeens then stated twice that “My name is Clinton Skeens, I am the man who killed Scott Jarrell,” according to the complaint.

At that point, the trooper advised Mr. Skeen to place his hands on the vehicle. According to the complaint, Mr. Skeens replied, “Why don’t you make me.”

According to the criminal complaint, as the trooper reached for a flashlight, Mr. Skeens punched him in the face.

The trooper said he then wrestled Skeens to the ground. He says the two continued to fight for several minutes until Mr. Skeens was finally subdued.

More troopers then arrived on the scene. A DMV check of the vehicle found that Mr. Skeens was driving a vehicle that belonged to Scott Jarrell.

Mr. Jarrell was found in his home on Wilson’ Creek with apparent knife wounds.

Clinton Skeens was charged with one count of murder. He was arraigned in Wayne County Magistrate Court on Saturday. He is being held without bond in the Western Regional Jail

A preliminary hearing is set for Wednesday.

There's no word yet on a motive.

Jarrell was a former football coach in Wayne County.
