NICHOLAS COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- An ambulance was wrecked and an emergency medical technician was stabbed Tuesday night by a patient that had gone crazy.

"Our in house dispatcher called and said the unit was having problems with their patient," Steve Davis, Vice President of Quinwood Ambulance, said.

Tuesday night Quinwood Ambulance Driver Michael Nutter went to help a man he though was in need. On the way to the hospital things took a turn for the worse.

"I pulled off the road and the patient unbuckled himself from the restraints on the cot. He ran out of the door and across the road," Nutter said.

The first responders called after Frankie Stroup, not wanting to leave him on the road. When Stroup ran back to the ambulance the men knew something was really wrong.

"Next thing I know he jumped through the cab and he was up there with me in the passenger seat threatening me," Nutter said.

Eventually Stroup stabbed the EMT in the head with a pair of scissors and stole the ambulance, but before he did both Nutter and the EMT got out of the vehicle.

"He put it in drive and he was gone. The doors on the back on the ambulance were just flopping going down the road. Me and my partner knew we had to get out of the road before he come back," Nutter said.

Not much later Stroup wrecked the ambulance and was arrested. A dangerous situation finally resolved, but not without a lot of damage left to fix.

"It makes you think twice next time before you go," Nutter said.

Several workers at Quinwood Ambulance believe Stroup was on drugs the night of the attack. Deputies say that's still under investigation.

Deputies say Stroup has been a problem for the sheriff's department in the past.

Stroup was charged with malicious wounding, grand larceny and felony destruction of property.
