HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A female Marshall University student was sexually assaulted late Monday night near campus, according to information from a Marshall University Police alert.

The incident happened about 11 p.m. Monday as the student was walking alone to her car -- parked in a private parking lot the 500-block of 20th Street.

The alleged assault follows two reported armed robberies on Friday and Saturday night in the same area. The suspects in those robberies were arrested by Huntington Police a short time after Saturday's robbery.

MU Director of Public Safety James Terry said in the alert that both MU Police and HPD have increased patrols in the area and that both agencies are gathering additional information about these incidents that they believe will assist in crime prevention.

Terry also encouraged everyone to be cautious and aware of their surroundings, particularly when they are off campus.

Those who would like a police escort to their cars may call MU Police at 304-696-4357. The service is available 24 hours each day. Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity is asked to call the same number to report what they see.
