Parents Unhappy With New Cabell County School Calendar

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Changes made to next year's Cabell County Schools calendar, that were made in preparation of winter weather, has made many parents unhappy.

Whether it's snow, ice, or sub-zero temperatures, this winter has been tough on school calendars across the region.

"We've missed so many days. Some counties have missed 20 to 30 days, and that's major. We need to have them in school," Superintendent William Smith said.

So far, Cabell County Schools have missed a total of nine days that will be made up this year. But it's talk of next year's calendar that has some parents unhappy.

The 2014-2015 calendar will begin Aug. 6 and end May 28. Since 2010 the start date has moved up from August 26 to now August 6, but to be fair the end date has also moved up.

Still, many parents say the early start date is killing their summer.

Parent Angela Clay spoke up at Tuesday night's school board meeting saying, "Children have to play. I'm not saying they don't need their 180 days, but a child needs so much time to be a child."

Another parent, Michele Woodall, said the new schedule doesn't leave time for vacation.

"Between 4-H camps and Boy Scout camps, my boys have four weeks of summer camp this year; that leaves no room for vacations at the end," she said.

West Virginia schools are mandated to be in session for a total of 180 days, no matter the weather. To help make that happen, the state has extended the number of weeks students can be in school.

"The possibilities are much easier, much greater, because it does expand up to 48 weeks. Our calendar will not be anywhere near year round calendar," Smith said.

It's something that may be easier for schools but not satisfying for parents.
