HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Police say a homeowner got his gun and began firing when he saw a man breaking into his home Monday afternoon.

The incident happened in the 300 block of Oney Avenue about 12:30 p.m.

Lieutenant John Williams tells WSAZ that the homeowner told officers that when he saw the intruder entering the house through a back bedroom window, he got a gun from a safe and opened fire.

Williams say eight or nine shots were fired. The suspect then fled the house through the same back bedroom window.

Police don't believe the intruder was hit by the gunfire.

The man told police the suspect was in his 20's, had a skinny build and short hair. He was wearing a dark shirt and jeans. Williams says when the suspect took off, he left behind his hat.

Officers, including a K-9 unit, searched the area for about an hour, but never found the suspect.

The homeowner was not hurt.

No arrests have been made.
