HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Odie White knows a thing or two about spring cleaning.

"Instead of sitting all winter long, I'm anxious to get outside," White said. "That's what I'm doing."

Odie and his neighbors spent this beautiful spring day outdoors, getting their block of Huntington shipshape.

"I like for my house to look good," White said. "Doctor said I needed the exercise, too."

Huntington Mayor Steve Williams is hoping other folks will get out and start cleaning up, too.

"We have a beautiful city," Mayor Williams said. "Tree lined streets. And we've just let it go downhill. You have neighborhoods where people are really taking care of their property and then around them people are just allowing their home to just go into disrepair."

That's why the mayor says he is rolling out a re-energized City-wide Clean-Up effort. It will split the city into five sections, based on what day your garbage is collected. Public Works employees will spend two weeks in each section picking up trash, brush and cutting back limbs.

"My granddad always used to say, the best perfume is soap and water," Williams said. "We're going to clean up the city."

During the clean-up, neighbors can get rid of their trash - cleaning up yards, outbuildings and porches.

The landfill will be open for trash drop off, and trash boxes will be placed in neighborhoods.

But if things aren't cleaned up by July 1st, the city will start writing citations.

“I think it's about time," White said. "I agree with them 100%. This city needs cleaned up. I'm gonna do anything I can."

And that anything, can start in your own backyard.
