HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A woman has been arrested and charged with embezzling more than $150,000 from her workplace.

Connie Whitley, 50, of Proctorville, was arraigned Saturday afternoon in Cabell County Magistrate Court after turning herself in to West Virginia State Police earlier in the day.

Whitley is charged with felony embezzlement.

State Police say Whitley was a bookkeeper with Uptowner Inn, which owns several hotels and HUD apartments.

According to the criminal complaint, Whitley wrote approximately 191 checks from five different accounts from July 2009 to September 2013.

Troopers say Whitley told them she was originally behind on bills and wrote the first check to pay them.

Whitley said she continued to write checks, and that the bulk of the money was spent on illegal pain pills for her husband’s drug habit.

She also said the money was use to buy a TV and buy supplies for her husband’s birdhouse business.
