Sisters Allegedly Stole Over $68k From Grandma With Dementia

MADISON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- One Boone County woman is in custody after she allegedly smuggled nearly $70,000 from her grandmother's savings account.

Elizabeth Austin is in jail, charged with financial exploitation of an incapacitated adult.

Her family tells WSAZ.com she was in charge of taking care of Meadows' estate in Madison, West Virginia for the past 11 months. Meadows has dementia and has needed care. They say another daughter was in charge of the finances.

The sheriff's department believes both are involved in stealing more than $68,000 from three banking accounts in the past year.

Court documents detail Austin received over $11,000 in cash from writing checks to herself.

The family says they believe the daughters played it off like the money was going to home repairs.

"It's absolutely sad. I mean, she was the sweetest person in the world. She would give you anything, she really would," said Jim Kitchen, a neighbor. "I cannot believe that anybody, relative or not, would take advantage of her."

Court documents say Meadows now does not have the money needed to pay for her medical expenses.

For now only Elizabeth Austin has been arrested, but the sheriff's department says this case is expected to grow significantly, likely with more arrests.
